Asphalt Patching and Repair

Patches are often the most misunderstood aspect of asphalt paving.  All surface types ranging from driveways to roadways require an experienced and educated contractor that can accurately diagnose and properly rectify a pavement failure.  At Creve Coeur Paving, we understand pavement failures.  We are able to identify what caused the failure, and will provide a suitable remedy to keep the problem from resurfacing.  While many other contractors may suggest a quick and cheap patch, we will offer a permanent solution.  We will never offer a shortcut that compromises our reputation.  In many instances our procedures cost more initially, but will save you money in the long-term perspective.

We offer solutions ranging from filling a minor pothole to excavation and full depth paving in multiple layers. You can be confident that your needs are addressed properly.

Skin Patch

Skin patches are the most economical way of patching or repairing asphalt.  Skin patches attempt to bridge over defects by adding a thin layer of compacted asphalt to the problem area.  This is seen more as a temporary fix because the defect is still there.  Eventually the problem will come back through the skin patch.  At that point, a more permanent repair will be needed.  Skin patches also alter the smoothness of pavement.  If you have a large parking lot with many skin patches, your pavement will not be desirable to drive on.  Installing a skin patch is simple and quick.  It can be done in small areas by hand, or large areas by paver.  First the area is outlined and marked.  Next an emulsion is sprayed on the surface to bond the two layers together.  After this, the asphalt is added to the surface and rolled to compaction.  The final step in the process is blending all the edges with an emulsion / aggregate mixture that prevents unraveling.

Benefits of skin patching are as follows:

  • Quick and easy.  Very economical.
  • Provides a temporary cover up of a defect that can last years.

Remove & replace

This method of repair is considered one of the most permanent, but also the most expensive.  This process is used on severely damaged asphalt surfaces such as heaving, settling, and yielding.  Our estimator will work with you to design the best possible repair.  Different levels of damage require different means of repair.  Generally the repair is completed by marking the area first.  Next we will saw-cut around the perimeter of the area.  Next we excavate the area to remove all contributing factors of the defect.  After this we install the prescribed amount of asphalt or base rock depending on the design.  After this we will add more additional layers of asphalt if required and compact the area.  Finally the repair is completed and ready for traffic.

Here are some benefits of using this method:

  • The entire defect is removed and stabilized.
  • This area will not have to be repaired again.
  • The process can be designed to accommodate any type of traffic or load force.
